Improving Quality of Life in South Carolina Communities

The Healthy Palmetto Leadership Council is a statewide coalition of organizations that are working together to promote healthy eating, active living, and healthy weight in South Carolina. The SC FitnessGram is an initiative to assess and improve fitness among public school students in the state. The Racial Equity Committee is also focused on racial equity to ensure a more equitable and healthier food system. South Carolina is home to both prosperous and impoverished areas, so improving health in the Carolinas requires a sustainable, collaborative, and learning health community.

The PH DEI Office provides knowledge, skills, resources, and technical assistance to support efforts to promote an inclusive and equitable environment and services that value and take advantage of the diversity of all public health personnel, partners, and communities in South Carolina. GO SC is a joint initiative of the Division of Early Care and Education of the South Carolina Department of Social Services and the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Prevention of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Management. This initiative works to strengthen local food systems in South Carolina; address food insecurity through the health system by expanding referral tools and resources; and explore strategies to address community design for physical activity and access to healthy food. The South Carolina Department of Aging has 10 local agencies on aging that help older people with SNAP requests.

The SCFPC serves as a forum for members to share their concerns and progress in programs and initiatives related to the food system in South Carolina. Since its launch in 2004, the HSSC has developed the concepts, infrastructure, and technology to become a leading force for improvements in research, education, and health service delivery in South Carolina. We are committed to unifying and mobilizing organizations working on healthy eating and active living initiatives in South Carolina. Our goal is to create an environment where everyone has an equitable opportunity to thrive. We are calling on all South Carolinians to take action based on data and evidence to promote the health and well-being of all citizens.
